Letting Go of This World

Since John Glenn orbited the Earth, I’ve been fascinated by man’s efforts to conquer space. I’m amazed by those that have the courage and determination to let go of the comfort and security of this world to go to another. The moon is our first stop along the way to the rest of the universe so of course it had to go into the picture.

The Coach

My father-in-law was affectionately called The Coach. He was a fantastic person, a loving father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. Coach served as a firefighter for 36 years in Calgary and was eventually promoted to the rank of Division Chief. He had a lifelong passion for racehorses and owned both thoroughbred and standardbred horses. The portrait of him was painted using only three colours of paint: Burnt Sienna, Cerulean Blue, and Titanium White. By varying the mix of these colours, I was able to create the range of greys required for the portrait.

Filling A Space In Our Hearts We Didn’t Know Was Empty

The birth of my granddaughter was special, a miracle for an average guy. Looking at her while I held her, I knew I had to try to capture that moment.

Admiral Hugo

Hugo was a cat my niece Allison rescued, who had to have his right front leg amputated but found a way to get around on the remaining three legs for the rest of his life. Despite being short a leg he always had an air of being in charge like an admiral. Hugo’s portrait is based on the famous portrait of Admiral Nelson by Abbott. In the original portrait, Nelson is depicted with his right sleeve pinned across the front of his coat because he lost his right arm in the Battle of Santa Cruz de Tenerife in 1797.

Best Friend

I was asked by a mother to paint a picture of a dog for her adult son from a number of old polaroid photographs taken many years ago. As a young boy her son and the dog were best friends and she told me how they would go to her father’s farm after harvest in the fall and run around in the fields. The dog is gone but the painting could revive those memories.

The Attack Marmot

Not every painting works out. Had an idea about doing a picture of a marmot on the rocks near Mount Assiniboine. Marmots are ground squirrels found in the mountains and are generally inquisitive and friendly and seem to show up while you’re eating lunch. Unfortunately, in this painting this guy looks like a killer attack animal so he’s in the basement with a collection of other misfit paintings.

Thompson’s Creek

I had been inspired by Tom Thomson’s “Logs at Water’s Edge” and decided to have a go at doing a Canadian landscape in that loose style. I had imagined a small creek cutting through the woods barely visible in the foreground and thought it should be named Thompson’s Creek.

Tofino at Sunset

I had spent some time trying to perfect that hazy atmospheric effect that you sometimes see over water. The challenge is to have the effect without losing too much detail. Adding to the challenge in this painting is the color shifting from the sunset and silhouetted colors in the trees.
Tofino is a beautiful place that you may want to add to your bucket list of places to visit. If you do go, make sure to do the hikes in the rain forest around Ucluelet and at Cathedral Grove.

Three Sisters

This was a very fast impressionistic painting of the Three Sisters Mountain in Canmore Alberta.

Mist at Tofino

I was contemplating how to capture the atmospheric effects of mist over water. This effect was achieved by layering very thin semi-transparent layers.
